College football: SUU QB named Big Sky preseason MVP

College football • Southern Utah quarterback Brad Sorensen has been named the Big Sky Conference’s preseason most valuable offensive player. Sorensen, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound senior from Grand Terrace, Calif., threw for 3,143 yards and 17 touchdowns last season.

The Big Sky’s preseason defensive MVP is Montana State linebacker Jody Owens.

The Big Sky also announced its preseason all-conference team Sunday. Joining Sorensen on the all-league team from SUU are Zach Brackus, a senior offensive lineman from Murray, and Cody Larsen, a senior defensive tackle from Draper. Weber State’s representatives on the team are sophomore fullback Tevia Tolutau of Provo and senior offensive lineman Tytan Timoteo of Wainae, Hawaii.

• Top-seeded John Isner defended his Hall of Fame Tennis Championships title by beating Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (1), 6-4 in Newport, R.I.
